St Mary's is the new site for the new Saints stadium which will take them into the new millennium with a capacity of 32,000 which can be extended to 50,000, this will help Saints remain one of the best clubs in the land. It would seem that the Saints are returning to where they came from because they originated in St Mary's hence they got their name from the Southampton St Mary's, the Saints. The site of the new ground is place in the old Gas Works which are now not used. Demolition has begun at the site only to find that underneath there is an old Saxon village with parts of animals dating back to 700 A.D. The club have said that this will not hold up the construction of the new site but anyone can see that this will delay the product by a bit but the club are sure that it will be open for August 2001. Latest developments are that building has started and that everything is on course at the moment. Newly opened is the viewing site at St Mary's where you can view the ground whilst development is taken place. I highly recommend a visit to the site for they have all the information on the ground and even a scale model. Here is a computer image of what one of the sides of the new ground will look like.
